History of Bataillard
Workshop:
In 1901, along a tiny street on Montmartre hill, Abel Bataillard founded
his workshop for forged iron. His work and his production of furniture,
chandeliers, lanterns, luminaires, gates, and various other items became
soon well known and appreciated.The
workshop continued to grow to include aproximately forty workers by the
beginning of World War II.
A Japanese patron,
Baron Tanaka, even propositioned Abel to move to Japan to work as an instructor.
Tanaka hoped that Abel would teach his tecniques and pass on his knowledge
to local artisans.
During World War II,
the workshop survived relying on fewer workers by focusing more on utilitarian
rather than artistic projects.
The restoration of forged iron elements of Jaques-Coeur Bourges palace
allowed the workshop to resume its traditional work at the end of the
war.
It is during the same time that the famous pre-war names of the forged
iron world disappeared due to changes in fashion and style (such as Art
Deco). Abel Bataillard, on the contrary, revived his workshop making it
prosperous and maintaining it for many years. Abelās success was a result
of his style of producing classic works using original production systems
combined with small "touche maison", precious small details
in his workshop..
The progressive rise in living standards,as well as, the development of
second homes resulted in a broader market for Abel Bataillard who provides
furnitures, chandaliers, lanterns, stair slopes, etc.
Ironwork was always a family business for the Bataillardās. In addition
to his daughter, who helps with the companyās managment, grandson J. P.
Guigo joined the company in the late 1950ās. He learned the trade like
all the other apprentices. In addition, he obtaining a solid, formal eduaction
at the Institute of Applied Arts. His abilities as a draftsman, as well
as his technical command in forging and empossing allowed him to sucessfully
succeed Abel.
At the begining of ninenteen-seventiesā, J. P. Guigo joined Cris Lagardele.
The union of the two companies gave a new dimension to the activity which
employed 60 workers involved in two complementary activities: wrought
iron of high artistic value and contemporary (modern), high technological
metalry. Prestigious building sites were developed in Africa (Ivory Coast,
Cameroon, Senegal), in the Middle-East (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq), in
the USA, and of course in Europe (in France, of note is the participation
in the restoration of the Stanislas Palace in Nancy).
In 1983, the activity took a turn for the worst after rendered work at
the Bagdad airport was not paid. The financial damage was such that the
Bataillard-Lagardale Company had to undergo a radical restucturation in
order to survive.
J. P. Guido concentrated all his efforts on top-of-the-line wrought iron
activity creating the "Bataillard Workshops" structure which,
mantianing the same spirit, still continues today.
Today, relying on a workshop which employs workers with vast experience
as well as apprentices, Ulisse Marcato re-launches "Bataillard Workshops"
focusing on two main priorities: continuing to improve the high-quality
wrought iron activity following in the foot-steps of the founder, Abel
Bataillard; and fostering a collaboration with the largest designers and
decorators of modern wrought iron models. Some work examples are the Schneider
Societys Director Office in Paris, Boulogne distric (decorator, Partice
Lyner; designer Bruno Valode); and the railing and entrance gate of the
Boutique Pierre Balmain in Paris (decorator, Alberto Pinto).
With over 100 years of experince, the Bataillard Workshop demonstrates
its ability to re-create 18th century atmospheres and products, as well
as, its ability to develop modern lines of products which will become
tomorrows classics.
